UnitedHealthcare Offers Refunds for Student Insurance Overpayments
Students overcharged by UnitedHealthcare between 2019–2021 can claim a refund. Deadline: Aug. 6, 2024.
Students who overpaid health insurance premiums between 2019 and 2021 may qualify for a refund through a program with UnitedHealthcare and the New York State Department of Financial Services. This refund is available to those who had excess insurance premiums applied to their UnitedHealthcare Student Resources Insurance accounts due to incorrect rates for the 2019–2020 and 2020–2021 plan years.
UnitedHealthcare acknowledged overcharging certain students for insurance premiums during these periods, which resulted in financial harm. Although UnitedHealthcare Student Resources, a provider of student insurance plans owned by UnitedHealthcare, did not admit to any wrongdoing, affected students can still benefit from this insurance refund program.
Eligible students will receive a refund based on the amount they overpaid in premiums during the eligible plan years. No specific refund estimates are currently available. Additionally, UnitedHealthcare has worked with the New York State Department of Financial Services to adjust student plan rates and prevent future overpayments.
