Apple Faces Class Action Fallout: $1.8M Settlement for Gift Card Issues

In a recent development, Apple has reached a $1.8 million settlement in response to allegations that it misrepresented the security and value of its gift cards. The lawsuit claimed that unauthorized third parties redeemed these cards before legitimate customers had the chance to use them, leading to financial losses for consumers.

The settlement covers individuals who purchased eligible gift cards between March 2018 and July 2020 and experienced such unauthorized redemptions without being offered a refund or replacement.

Apple customers in California, who bought gift cards between May 2017 and February 2018, are included within their own settlement ‘subgroup’. This subgroup faced similar issues with their gift cards being redeemed by unknown third parties, without the provision of a refund or replacement by Apple. Plaintiffs argued that Apple’s failure to secure its gift cards and the lack of warnings about potential theft constituted misrepresentation of the cards’ value and security.
